Aluminium is a strategic material to enable carbon neutral and circular value chains. There should be tailor made policies and incentives for such strategic value chains in Europe, reflecting their importance to the economy and society. Today, the European Union is well advanced in reaching its objective of cutting its domestic GHG emissions by at least 40 percent by 2030 from 1990 levels.
This is in line with the EU objective to reduce its emissions by 80-95 percent by 2050 compared to 1990. With its recent publication on the EU mid-century strategy the European Commission opened a thorough debate to ensure that the EU’s climate policy is in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, while aligning action in key areas such as industrial policy, finance, or research.
